Email Marketing Tips – More Subject Line Strategies

In our last installment of email marketing tips, we began a discussion of subject lines and their importance in getting prospects to open your emails. We focused primarily on the benefit type subject line. In this installment, we’re going to cover more subject line strategies that I am sure you will find quite effective if used properly.

Another subject line that is quite effective is the scarcity line. Now let me start off by saying that I in NO WAY condone false scarcity. If you’re going to say you’re only selling X number of units of your product, you damn well better mean it. Otherwise, you lose all respect from me.

An example of this type of subject line would be something like this.

“WordPress Confidential With PLR On Sale Now – ONLY 50 Going”

This is actually an email subject that I used for one of my products that I was offering PLR rights to. It was very effective as it netted me about $1,500 in just one day. And that’s without it even selling out.

The reason scarcity works is because people are afraid of losing out on an offer. They don’t want to wake up the next morning saying to themselves, “Damn…I should have gotten that when I had the chance. Now it’s all gone.”

As I said, true scarcity can be very effective. However, lie to people about something like this and eventually it WILL come back to haunt you.

Another very effective subject line is what I call the “Curiosity” subject line.

For example, something like this can work great…

“John Doe Called Me A Crook!” where John Doe is actually some big name guru. Naturally, when your subscribers see something like that, they’re going to want to know WHY John Doe called you a crook. This will get them to open up the email.

Curiosity is one of the most powerful things in this world. How many people could walk by a table with a box sitting on the table and NOT want to look and see what’s in the box?

Why do you think, every time there is an accident on the other side of the road, everybody on YOUR side just has to stop and look? It’s curiosity. They need to see if there are any heads rolling down the highway.

They say that curiosity killed the cat. One thing it never killed is an email marketing campaign. If you can get people curious as to what’s in your email, that’s half the battle won.

Another effective email subject tactic is the question.

For example:

“What Do You Think Of The New Ezine Article Platinum Author’s Program?”

If you have a list targeting article writers and marketers, they’re going to want to open this for two reasons.

1. They’re probably thinking that you want THEIR opinion and this is their chance to actually write back to YOU.

2. They’re going to want to see what YOUR opinion is on it, not really knowing if you’re even going to give one or not.

People can’t help but want to answer questions. That’s why poll threads at forums are so popular. People LOVE giving their opinion because now THEY are the focus.

These are just a few of the many email marketing subject line tactics that you can use.

We’ll have more in our next installment.
